Samenvatting project

This project investigates drying after priming in tomato, leek, and lettuce seeds to preserve vigour and shelf life. Using physiological, biochemical, and molecular analyses, we aim to reveal species-specific and universal seed responses, develop predictive markers, and create practical guidelines for commercial seed processing -strengthening the Dutch seed sector, supporting exports, and safeguarding food security.

Doel van het project

• Scientifically evaluate fast, slow, and gradual drying strategies after priming using tomato, leek, and lettuce seeds as model crops due to their contrasting seed treatment responses and commercial importance.
• Generate comprehensive physiological, biochemical, and molecular datasets capturing the effects of drying.
• Develop predictive, non-destructive assays and quality control protocols to support seed processing decisions.
• Provide evidence-based drying recommendations tailored to specific crops.
• Establish foundational knowledge to support future development of molecular markers guiding optimized drying protocols.

Motivatie

Seed priming has revolutionized seed performance by enabling faster, more uniform germination and improving crop establishment. However, post-priming drying remains a critical technical vulnerability. Improper drying—whether too fast or too slow—can severely reduce seed shelf life by compromising antioxidant capacity, damaging membranes, and disrupting hormonal balances. This undermines the commercial value of primed seeds and poses risks in inventory management.

Seed companies currently face several challenges due to lack of optimized drying protocols: reduced viability and vigor during storage, depreciation of high-value seed stocks causing financial losses, difficulty in standardizing protocols across batches or species, and an inability to predict seed lot storability post-treatment.

Geplande resultaten

1. Mechanistic insight
• New understanding of how drying rate and post-priming physiological status jointly control membrane stability, antioxidant systems, and hormone networks that govern desiccation tolerance and shelf life.
• Identification of biochemical markers and gene expression indicators associated with prolonged seed shelf life.
• Scientific publications contributing to the training and development of the next generation of seed technologists.

2. Implementable know-how
• Practical drying guidelines co-developed with seed companies and tested on commercially relevant seed species.
• Reduction in seed loss and batch-to-batch variability post-treatment.
• Early-stage diagnostic workflows for industry quality control teams, based on a small set of measurable indicators that can serve as baselines and gate decisions in drying workflows before storage.
